7 weeks of luggage plus a tent and sleeping bag.
Tiananmen square and the forbidden city in Beijing. |
Looking good in Beijing. The Jeep in good company with
the 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall of Lord Montague. |
Some of the competitors. Eating Peking Duck in Beijing
and the nosh tent on camping night. |
Some of the locals in China and Tibet. Each night we had
military or police guards for the vehicles. |
Milestones on the way, the 1000 and 5000 km posts and two
high passes, 16,800 ft and 17,400ft. |
China is vast. Some of the roads we used, long, hot,
dusty and spectacular. |
And the senary is endless, breathtaking views, thats if
you like mountains. |
Time controls. We had to find on average 4 of these per
day and do so on time to avoid penalties. |
Welcome banners in Tibet, Nepal and India. We must have
passed under at least 50 along the route. |
What a fantastic place. Camping at 14,000ft with the
North face of Everest as a back drop. |
Everest at sunset with my tent in the foreground. I will
never forget this view. |
Besides the good camp sites (top) we also had the bad. At
Chocksum in Tibet we camped in the pig yard. |
From Tibet to Nepal we dropped 11,000ft in 20 miles to
cross Friendship Bridge. This road was a nightmare. The
landslides were removed only three days before we
arrived. |
We saw temperatures of 45C inside the jeep while crossing
this Desert in Pakistan. This twister crossed the road
less than a mile in front of us. |
In northern Iran (top) and eastern Turkey we saw lots of
military. This is the Kurd area and no one wanted us to
stray away from the agreed route. |
Spectacular Monasteries in Greece. Waiting to start a wet
hill climb that turned out to be very slippery. |
After the Gala Dinner in Paris. Sitting with me by the
Jeep is Bob Maynard, the man who prepaired the Jeep.
Thanks Bob. |
Do you like the hat? I can't wait to do the next long
haul event, London to Cape Town in October 98. |
